Shandong Adds 17,900 Electric Heavy Trucks as New-Energy Penetration Reaches 36.6%

Shandong added 17,900 electric heavy trucks for commercial transport from January through September 2026, an increase of more than 200% year on year, according to the Shandong Provincial Department of Transport. The province’s reported penetration rate for new-energy commercial heavy trucks reached 36.6%, up 19.7 percentage points from the end of the previous year.

September’s monthly penetration rate reached 56%. That places the monthly figure above the reported overall rate, indicating stronger adoption toward the end of the nine-month period. A single month’s result, however, does not establish the pace that subsequent months will maintain.

The figures capture two aspects of the shift: the number of electric heavy trucks entering commercial service and the penetration of new-energy heavy trucks. These categories should be read carefully. The 17,900 additions refer specifically to electric vehicles, while the penetration figures use the broader new-energy classification. They should not be treated as interchangeable measures.

For fleet operators, the scale of electric truck additions makes charging access and vehicle scheduling increasingly relevant operational considerations. If additions continue at a similar pace, demand for supporting charging capacity and maintenance services could rise. The extent of that demand would depend on where the trucks operate, their duty cycles and how effectively existing facilities can support them.

The clearest signal is the acceleration in adoption reflected in both vehicle additions and the higher penetration rate. Subsequent transport data will help show whether September’s level persists. For the businesses supporting these vehicles, the practical question is how sustained additions translate into infrastructure use and service requirements.
