China’s New Energy Heavy Truck Share Tops 50% as Technology Rivalry Comes Into Focus

New energy vehicles accounted for 50.28% of China’s domestic heavy truck market in September 2026, exceeding the 50% threshold for the first time, according to China Industry News Network. The monthly figure puts new energy heavy trucks just above half of the market, marking a shift in the competitive landscape.

The executive president of CATL’s heavy industry business division said the contest between diesel and electric heavy trucks had ended and that the industry was entering a new phase of competition among electric technology approaches. That assessment signals an expected change in the focus of competition, although the September figure alone does not establish that diesel demand has disappeared.

The distinction matters: a monthly penetration rate describes the market during that period, rather than the composition of the entire truck fleet. Crossing 50% is a meaningful milestone, but whether new energy heavy trucks can sustain and extend that share will determine how firmly the shift takes hold.

If competition increasingly takes place among electric alternatives, fleet purchasing decisions could place greater weight on differences in operating costs, vehicle availability and suitability for specific transport duties. For truck manufacturers and battery suppliers, this could increase the importance of demonstrating practical advantages in those areas. The reported market share does not, by itself, identify which technology approach will prevail.

Subsequent monthly penetration figures will help show whether September marks a sustained change. Evidence comparing the operating performance of competing electric approaches would also help assess how far the market is moving toward the competitive phase described by CATL.
